NSERC Chair responds to criticism

Jim Edwards, V-P and chair of NSERC, has responded to criticisms about the political appointments to his organization’s board and CFI’s with a letter to the editor in the Globe and Mail today. He reminds readers that individual funding decisions are “based on international peer review, which involves rigorous assessment by impartial experts in the specific field“. He enumerates how many impartial experts they have, and is wounded by the suggestion that research funding in Canada is being politicized since it “demeans an excellent, internationally respected peer-review process“. Sorry, Mr. Edwards – I think there’s been a misunderstanding. No one is suggesting that the individual reviews of grant applications are being directed by the PMO.
