Innovation Leadership Required
In an editorial today, the Globe and Mail has called for someone to champion the cause of science, technology and innovation. Citing the recent STIC report, the Globe notes an emerging consensus that Canada needs to act to improve its productivity and innovation. The editorial notes that, despite widespread agreement on the problems, relevant parties such as government, researchers and industry spend their time arguing with each other. As we’ve noted here, it is time to build positive communication between stakeholders so as to ensure a strong and rational science policy that works for Canadians. The Globe editorial board agrees this is necessary:
If Canada hopes to improve its middling performance, government and university leaders, industry and researchers need to find common ground. Most of all they need leadership, someone or a group of individuals who can articulate the problem and champion this cause.
