“…. having failed so definitively to pick winners in the marketplace for goods, governments have been empowered to pick winners in the far more subtle marketplace for ideas.”

“Mr. Obama’s central message to his countrymen is … to behave as if they have a future. In Canada, favoured as we are, we find this hard.”

“Science, especially basic science, is regarded as an activity of small national importance. Science policy is the domain of junior politicians. But can we be talking about the same endeavour — the same source of “boundless hope” in which the President of the United States sees such huge potential? Canada needs to give the matter more thought.”
