NSERC’s new modus operandi (1)

April 18, 2009
  • add to GSC budgets $x  for each one of the new applicants
  • add $y as a percentage of the grants of the returning applicants
  • require the minimum grant to be $3 times x

Outcome:

  • Many returning applicants cut or denied
  • Elimination of many smaller grants
  • Success rate plummets

Good, bad or ugly? Of course, all this depends on how large $x and $y are.

Let us know what you think and what happened at your GSC!

Not to mention a completely formulaic approach to rating the applications: a score from 0 to 6 on each of 3 categories, totalled to give a “bin” and $$ assigned by a fixed algorithm. Let’s replace the GSC members by a computer.
