Bottom line: the budget was unchanged, and fewer people got grants.

Why?

  • Evaluation system changed (topic to be discussed later)
  • Fewer people applied
  • Success rate went down on the average from 71 per cent in 2008 to 63 (and much more in some disciplines)

Rob Annan makes very astute observations linking the new system with a recent debate about abolishing the DGP review process

We kept clear of that debate, because we found it distracting from the main issue of the lack of sufficient funding. But the whole NSERC review process will definitely be taken up on this weblog in the very near future.
