NSERC announces fisheries money
Fisheries and aquaculture research is getting $8.8-million from NSERC’s Strategic Grants Program this year, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Sheehy announced yesterday. The money, which will fund 23 research projects in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, is to fund “early-stage, targeted project research that has a strong potential to enhance Canada’s economy, society or environment within the next decade“. It is part of $21.8-million NSERC will spend on fisheries and aquaculture research initiatives in the next five years, following a targeted investment made in Budget 2008. Roughly half the spending will be in Atlantic Canada (roughly 25% of the spending – $2.25-million – at Memorial University in Newfoundland). This money is apparently matched by a roughly equal investment from private and public partners (including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans).
