Community reacts to Bliss
The bloggers at Genomicron and Sandwalk have joined in answering Michael Bliss’s recent critical commentary in the National Post. Genomicron does a nice job of enumerating (yet again) researchers’ actual concerns about science policy directions, putting the lie to Bliss’ assertion that scientists just want more and more money. Sandwalk takes issue with Bliss’ defense of applied research at the expense of basic research, reminding readers that the production of insulin requires both applied research in pursuit of a diabetes treatment and the basic knowledge that led to recombinant DNA technology which makes it possible to produce insulin. Seems to me that the community is coalescing in the face of misplaced and unfair criticism by political opportunists.
